Surat Al-Balad (The City) is the ninetieth chapter of the Qur’an with 20 ayat.

Surah Al Balad (The Land)

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.

1. I swear by this land.
2. And you are a resident of this land.
3. And by a father and what he fathered.
4. We created man in distress.
5. Does he think that no one has power over him?
6. He says, “I have used up so much money.”
7. Does he think that no one sees him?
8. Did We not give him two eyes?
9. And a tongue, and two lips?
10. And We showed him the two ways?
11. But he did not brave the ascent.
12. And what will explain to you what the ascent is?
13. The freeing of a slave.
14. Or the feeding on a day of hunger.
15. An orphan near of kin.
16. Or a destitute in the dust.
17. Then he becomes of those who believe, and advise one another to patience, and advise one another to kindness.
18. These are the people of happiness.
19. But as for those who defy Our revelations—these are the people of misery.
20. Upon them is a padlocked Fire.

Laa uqsimu bihadzaal balad(i)	لا أُقْسِمُ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ	1
Wa-anta hillun bihadzaal balad(i)	وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ	2
Wawaalidin wamaa walad(a)	وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ	3
Laqad khalaqnaa-insaana fii kabadin	لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الإنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ	4
Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira 'alaihi ahadun	أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ	5
Yaquulu ahlaktu maaalan lubadan	يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالا لُبَدًا	6
Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun	أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ	7
Alam naj'al lahu 'ainain(i)	أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ	8
Walisaanan wasyafatain(i)	وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ	9
Wahadainaahun-najdain(i)	وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ	10
Falaaaqtahamal 'aqabat(a)	فَلا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ	11
Wamaa adraaka maal 'aqabat(u)	وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ	12
Fakku raqabatin	فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ	13
Au ith'aamun fii yaumin dzii masghabatin	أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ	14
Yatiiman dzaa maqrabatin	يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ	15
Au miskiinan dzaa matrabatin	أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ	16
Tsumma kaana minal-ladziina aamanuu watawaashau bish-shabri watawaashau bil marhamat(i)	ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ	17
Uula-ika ashhaabul maimanat(i)	أُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ	18
Waal-ladziina kafaruu biaayaatinaa hum ashhaabul masyamat(i)	وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ	19
'Alaihim naarun mu'shadatun	عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ	20
